Tried & tested: ZO Skin Health Retinol + Blemish Complex

ZO Skin Health Retinol + Blemish Complex

We recently had the opportunity to try ZO Skin Health's Retinol + Blemish Complex. CWM editor Olivia Gibson did the honours. Here, she shares her findings...

"As someone who struggles with uneven skin texture, I was really excited to try the ZO Skin Health Retinol + Blemish Complex. I have combination skin with hyperpigmentation and dark spots, so I’d been searching for something to brighten and even out my complexion -  this product didn't disappoint!

"The lightweight, fragrance-free formula absorbs quickly, but as it contains potent ingredients, I introduced it slowly, starting with once a week at night. Strong actives can cause dryness, irritation, peeling and increased sensitivity, so giving your skin time to adjust is essential. I use it exclusively at night since retinol is sensitive to sunlight and can make the skin more vulnerable to UV damage, which is why daily SPF is essential. After a couple of weeks, I increased my usage to twice a week.

"My routine is simple! I use a gentle cleanser, apply a pea-sized amount of this new product using the pump and smooth it evenly over my face. I finish with a calming, hydrating moisturiser.

"I noticed a few temporary breakouts in the first week, which is classic purging that’s completely normal. The boost in cell turnover brings underlying spots to the surface more quickly, so anything already lurking beneath the skin tends to appear early on. After a few weeks, I began to see real improvements with refined pores, better oil balance and a noticeably smoother texture. My stubborn dark marks had also faded, and my breakouts were coming up less and less. I did experience some dryness around my mouth, nose and chin, but this eased as my skin adapted, especially with a richer moisturiser.

"It’s certainly an investment, but the results I’ve seen in just a few weeks make it feel worthwhile. I’m excited to continue using it and see even more progress.
For any couples preparing for a wedding and considering starting retinol, avoid starting too close to the big day. Initial purging, redness, peeling or sensitivity are all possible, so giving your skin plenty of time to settle is key. On retinol nights, skip other exfoliating acids (like glycolic acid, AHA/BHA toners, or peels). Add a hydrating serum for extra moisture and pair everything with a barrier-friendly moisturiser. If you’re nervous, patch test on a small area like the jawline for a week before fully committing.

"Here’s to glowing skin and a boost of confidence to match!"
